What to wear to play pickleball

Good news: there is no dress code. You do not need to buy an outfit to play pickleball. But a few small choices make the game more comfortable.

The basics

Wear clothes you can move and sweat in. Shorts, a skirt, leggings, a t-shirt, whatever you already own for exercise. "Moisture-wicking" fabric helps, which just means material that pulls sweat off your skin so you stay drier. Cotton gets heavy and damp, so lean toward athletic fabric if you have it.

Pockets are your friend

Here is a small thing that makes a real difference: pick bottoms with pockets. During a game you often hold the next ball while you serve, and a pocket saves you from juggling it. It sounds tiny. You will thank me on the court.

For outdoor play

Most beginners in warm places play outside, so add a hat or visor and sunglasses. The ball is light and the sun can hide it. Sunscreen too. Morning sessions can start cool and heat up, so a layer you can take off is smart.

One thing that is not optional

Your shoes. Do not play in running shoes. That is a safety thing, and I explain it in court shoes vs running shoes.

Start with what you have. Buy the fun outfits later, once you know you love the game.
