Court shoes vs running shoes for pickleball

If you read one gear page before your first game, make it this one. It is short, and it can save your ankle.

The problem with running shoes

Running shoes are made for one thing: moving forward. They have soft, tall soles that push you ahead. But pickleball is a side to side sport. You shuffle, cut, and change direction fast. On a tall soft sole, your foot can tip over the edge when you move sideways, and that is how ankles roll. It is one of the most common beginner injuries, and it is avoidable.

Why court shoes work

Court shoes, the kind made for tennis or pickleball, sit lower to the ground and grip sideways. They hold your foot flat and steady when you push off to the side. Less wobble, less rolling, more control.

What to look for

If you already own tennis shoes, you are set. Use those. If not, a basic pair does the job. You do not need the expensive ones.

Everything else in pickleball you can learn slowly and safely. Your shoes are the one place I would not cut a corner on day one.
